Camp is in full swing, we are getting to know each other, playing fun games together and this week we are learning about Sh’mitah. Shteelim Explore the Idea of הפקר (Hefker – Ownerless)

This week in Shteelim, we were able to explore two of our areas of focus – the concept of הפקר (hefker – ownerless) and counting בעברית (b’Ivrit – in Hebrew) – at the same time! In our farming play area, we set out with the new challenge of taking only as much as we need from others’ …

We didn’t know how our children had experienced Shabbat beyond lighting candels and singing special songs, so we weren’t sure the comparison would be helpful.   This week, without my …

Our first week in this theme was guided by learning foundational knowledge about the שמיטה year and the farming process, generating many questions and wonderings about שמיטה, and keeping track of all the new information we learned. To do these …

All Anafim learned about our new theme, שמיטה (Sh’mitah), were the following facts: שמיטה (Sh’mitah) happens every 7 years. שמיטה (Sh’mitah) means release.  During the שמיטה (Sh’mitah) year, all agricultural activity, including plowing, planting, pruning and harvesting, is forbidden in the land of Israel. שמיטה (Sh’mitah) laws regarding the land apply only in the land …
