Back in the Midbar (Wilderness)

ענפים (Anafim, “Branches” for 3rd-4th grade) are just beginning their last theme for this school year: שבועות (Shavuot, “weeks”). One of the sources that ענפים (Anafim) are exploring is a short text from ספר דברים (Sefer Devarim, the book of Deuteronomy) 16, which gives instructions about celebrating the summer harvest festival. But as Anafim know, ספר דברים (Sefer …

Wrapping up Bamidbar

This week in Beit Shorashim/Shteelim (Nursery and Kindergarten) we completed our final text for this theme. The children sequenced the whole text (Bamidbar 13) starting with Adonai telling Moshe to send out scouts to explore the land. Moshe sent out the scouts, but added some questions for them to think about when scouting the land. …

Our own way

Look carefully. Do you see the cool thing about this picture? What are the children doing? Each time we in ענפים (Anafim, branches, our 3rd-4th grade group) discover a new text as part of our במדבר (Bamidbar, In the Wilderness) theme, we start off doing pretty much the same things all together. We read the text together. Then we …

Our Journey, Bamidbar

This week we went on a journey giving us the real feeling of what the Israelites could have felt בַּמִּדְבָּר (Bamidbar).

Beginning our Journey Bamidbar

This week in Beit Shorashim (“Roots” for nursery) and Shteelim (“Saplings” for kindergarten), we began learning and playing what is would be like for the Israelites to leave Egypt and to be במדבר (Bamidbar is the place in between your old home and your new home), based on שמות (Shemot-Exodus) 1-15, in the תורה (Torah). …

Not just a gem

Building is a favorite modality for many children in ענפים (Anafim, “branches,“ our 3rd-4th grade group). The children have used assortments of small materials to show their ideas about texts for years, and are adept at taking many different kinds of texts and making them visible through the symbolic use of pretty much any set of materials. …
