בְּרֵאשִׁית מ Genesis 40: Nursery and Kindergarten version
| א) וַיְהִי, אַחַר הַדְּבָרִים הָאֵלֶּה, חָטְאוּ מַשְׁקֵה מֶלֶךְ-מִצְרַיִם, וְהָאֹפֶה–לַאֲדֹנֵיהֶם, לְמֶלֶךְ מִצְרָיִםב) וַיִּקְצֹף פַּרְעֹה, עַל שְׁנֵי סָרִיסָיו–עַל שַׂר הַמַּשְׁקִים, וְעַל שַׂר הָאוֹפִיםג) וַיִּתֵּן אֹתָם בְּמִשְׁמַר, בֵּית שַׂר הַטַּבָּחִים–אֶל-בֵּית הַסֹּהַר: מְקוֹם, אֲשֶׁר יוֹסֵף אָסוּר שָׁםד) וַיִּפְקֹד שַׂר הַטַּבָּחִים אֶת-יוֹסֵף, אִתָּם–וַיְשָׁרֶת אֹתָם; וַיִּהְיוּ יָמִים, בְּמִשְׁמָר | 1) A while later, the king of Egypt’s cupbearer (he was the person who brought Par’oh’s wine to him) and the baker made their master the king of Egypt upset. 2) Par’oh got angry at these two officers, the cupbearer and the baker. 3) Par’oh put them in prison in the chief guard’s prison, where Yosef was in prison. 4) The chief guard made Yosef in charge of them, and he took care of them [the cupbearer and the baker], and they were there in the prison for awhile. |
| ה) וַיַּחַלְמוּ חֲלוֹם שְׁנֵיהֶם אִישׁ חֲלֹמוֹ, בְּלַיְלָה אֶחָד–אִישׁ, כְּפִתְרוֹן חֲלֹמוֹ: הַמַּשְׁקֶה וְהָאֹפֶה, אֲשֶׁר לְמֶלֶךְ מִצְרַיִם, אֲשֶׁר אֲסוּרִים, בְּבֵית הַסֹּהַרו) וַיָּבֹא אֲלֵיהֶם יוֹסֵף, בַּבֹּקֶר; וַיַּרְא אֹתָם, וְהִנָּם זֹעֲפִים | 5) Then, both of them– the cupbearer and the baker of the king of Egypt– dreamed a dream, each person his own dream, on the same night. Each dream meant something different. 6) When Yosef came in to check on them in the morning, the cupbearer and the baker were worried. |
| ז) וַיִּשְׁאַל אֶת-סְרִיסֵי פַרְעֹה, אֲשֶׁר אִתּוֹ בְמִשְׁמַר בֵּית אֲדֹנָיו–לֵאמֹר: מַדּוּעַ פְּנֵיכֶם רָעִים, הַיּוֹםח) וַיֹּאמְרוּ אֵלָיו–חֲלוֹם חָלַמְנוּ, וּפֹתֵר אֵין אֹתוֹ; וַיֹּאמֶר אֲלֵהֶם יוֹסֵף, הֲלוֹא לֵאלֹהִים פִּתְרֹנִים–סַפְּרוּ-נָא, לִי | 7) He asked them, “Why do you look so unhappy today?” 8) They said to him, “We dreamed dreams, and there’s no one to explain them.” Yosef said, “Don’t all explanations come from God? Please tell me your dreams.” |
| ט) וַיְסַפֵּר שַׂר-הַמַּשְׁקִים אֶת-חֲלֹמוֹ, לְיוֹסֵף; וַיֹּאמֶר לוֹ–בַּחֲלוֹמִי, וְהִנֵּה-גֶפֶן לְפָנָיי) וּבַגֶּפֶן, שְׁלֹשָׁה שָׂרִיגִם; וְהִוא כְפֹרַחַת עָלְתָה נִצָּהּ, הִבְשִׁילוּ אַשְׁכְּלֹתֶיהָ עֲנָבִים.יא) וְכוֹס פַּרְעֹה, בְּיָדִי; וָאֶקַּח אֶת-הָעֲנָבִים, וָאֶשְׂחַט אֹתָם אֶל-כּוֹס פַּרְעֹה, וָאֶתֵּן אֶת-הַכּוֹס, עַל-כַּף פַּרְעֹה | 9) The cupbearer told Yosef his dream. He said, “In my dream, there was a grapevine before me. 10) On the vine there were three branches. It flowered and buds came up, and its bunches of grapes ripened. 11) And I took the grapes and I squeezed them into Par’oh’s cup and I put the cup into Par’oh’s hand.” |
| יב) וַיֹּאמֶר לוֹ יוֹסֵף, זֶה פִּתְרֹנוֹ: שְׁלֹשֶׁת, הַשָּׂרִגִים–שְׁלֹשֶׁת יָמִים, הֵםיג) בְּעוֹד שְׁלֹשֶׁת יָמִים, יִשָּׂא פַרְעֹה אֶת-רֹאשֶׁךָ, וַהֲשִׁיבְךָ, עַל-כַּנֶּךָ; וְנָתַתָּ כוֹס-פַּרְעֹה, בְּיָדוֹ, כַּמִּשְׁפָּט הָרִאשׁוֹן, אֲשֶׁר הָיִיתָ מַשְׁקֵהוּ | 12) Yosef said to him, “This is what your dream means: the three branches mean three days. 13) Three days from now, Par’oh will give you your job back, and you will get to give Par’oh’s cup to him just like you used to do when you were his cupbearer. |
| יד) כִּי אִם-זְכַרְתַּנִי אִתְּךָ, כַּאֲשֶׁר יִיטַב לָךְ, וְעָשִׂיתָ-נָּא עִמָּדִי, חָסֶד; וְהִזְכַּרְתַּנִי, אֶל-פַּרְעֹה, וְהוֹצֵאתַנִי, מִן-הַבַּיִת הַזֶּהטו) כִּי-גֻנֹּב גֻּנַּבְתִּי, מֵאֶרֶץ הָעִבְרִים; וְגַם-פֹּה לֹא-עָשִׂיתִי מְאוּמָה, כִּי-שָׂמוּ אֹתִי בַּבּוֹר | 14) Now, when this good thing happens to you, please remember me and be kind to me and let Par’oh know about me and help get me out of this place. 15) Because I was indeed stolen from the land of the Hebrews, and here also, I didn’t do anything to deserve getting put into prison.” |
| טז) וַיַּרְא שַׂר-הָאֹפִים, כִּי טוֹב פָּתָר; וַיֹּאמֶר, אֶל-יוֹסֵף, אַף-אֲנִי בַּחֲלוֹמִי, וְהִנֵּה שְׁלֹשָׁה סַלֵּי חֹרִי עַל-רֹאשִׁייז) וּבַסַּל הָעֶלְיוֹן, מִכֹּל מַאֲכַל פַּרְעֹה–מַעֲשֵׂה אֹפֶה; וְהָעוֹף, אֹכֵל אֹתָם מִן-הַסַּל–מֵעַל רֹאשִׁי | 16) The baker saw that the explanation for that dream was good, so he said to Yosef, “In MY dream, there were three bread-baskets stacked on my head. 17) In the basket on top, there were all kinds of baked things for Par’oh to eat. But birds were eating them out of the basket on my head!” |
| יח) וַיַּעַן יוֹסֵף וַיֹּאמֶר, זֶה פִּתְרֹנוֹ: שְׁלֹשֶׁת, הַסַּלִּים–שְׁלֹשֶׁת יָמִים, הֵםיט) בְּעוֹד שְׁלֹשֶׁת יָמִים, יִשָּׂא פַרְעֹה אֶת-רֹאשְׁךָ מֵעָלֶיךָ, וְתָלָה אוֹתְךָ, עַל-עֵץ; וְאָכַל הָעוֹף אֶת-בְּשָׂרְךָ, מֵעָלֶיךָ | 18) Yosef answered, “This is what your dream means. | כג) וְלֹא-זָכַר שַׂר-הַמַּשְׁקִים אֶת-יוֹסֵף, וַיִּשְׁכָּחֵהוּ | 23) But the cupbearer did not remember about Yosef. He forgot all about him. |

| כ Three days later, it was Par’oh’s birthday, and he had a party with all his subjects. Two years later, Par’oh had a dream. He was standing by the Nile river. And out of the Nile river came seven big, plump, good-looking cows. And then seven more cows came out from the Nile river. They were bad-looking and skinny. And then the bad-looking, skinny cows ate the big, plump, good-looking cows! And then Par’oh woke up.
Then Par’oh fell asleep and had a second dream. Now seven good, plump ears of grain grew. And seven thin ears of grain grew. And the seven skinny ears of grain swallowed up the seven plump, full ears of grain. And then Par’oh woke up. And it was [just] a dream.
The next morning, Par’oh was worried, and he asked all the magicians and wise men in Egypt to come to him. Par’oh told them his dream, but none of them could tell Par’oh what it means.
Then the cupbearer said to Par’oh, “I just remembered! When I was in prison, there was a man there. When I told him my dream, he told me what it meant. And then everything happened just as the man said it would.”
Par’oh sent for Yosef and they rushed him out of the pit. He shaved and changed his clothes and went to Par’oh.
Par’oh told Yosef his dreams.
Yosef said to Par’oh, “Your dreams are both saying the same thing. There will be seven years —Seven great, full years for everyone in Egypt where the land grows a lot of food. Then after that there will be seven years of famine (being hungry), and no one will be able to even remember being full in Egypt.
Par’oh said to Yosef, “I will put you in charge of the whole land of Egypt.” Par’oh took his ring off of his hand and put it on Yosef’s hand, and dressed him in fancy clothes and put a gold chain around his neck.
During the seven years, Yosef gathered up all the food in the land of Egypt, and put the food in cities.
Yosef had two sons before the year of famine (being hungry) came. The name of the first son was Menashe, and the name of the second son was Efraim.
The seven years of fullness in the land of Egypt ended, and the seven years of famine (being hungry) started to come just as Yosef had said.

| ט) וַיְדַבֵּר שַׂר הַמַּשְׁקִים, אֶת-פַּרְעֹה לֵאמֹר: אֶת-חֲטָאַי, אֲנִי מַזְכִּיר הַיּוֹםי) פַּרְעֹה, קָצַף עַל-עֲבָדָיו; וַיִּתֵּן אֹתִי בְּמִשְׁמַר, בֵּית שַׂר הַטַּבָּחִים–אֹתִי, וְאֵת שַׂר הָאֹפִיםיא) וַנַּחַלְמָה חֲלוֹם בְּלַיְלָה אֶחָד, אֲנִי וָהוּא: אִישׁ כְּפִתְרוֹן חֲלֹמוֹ, חָלָמְנוּיב) וְשָׁם אִתָּנוּ נַעַר עִבְרִי, עֶבֶד לְשַׂר הַטַּבָּחִים, וַנְּסַפֶּר-לוֹ, וַיִּפְתָּר-לָנוּ אֶת-חֲלֹמֹתֵינוּ: אִישׁ כַּחֲלֹמוֹ, פָּתָריג) וַיְהִי כַּאֲשֶׁר פָּתַר-לָנוּ, כֵּן הָיָה: אֹתִי הֵשִׁיב עַל-כַּנִּי, וְאֹתוֹ תָלָה | 9) Then the chief cupbearer said to Par’oh, “I just remembered! I’ve done something bad! 10) When your majesty Par’oh was angry at your servant [me] and sent me to the chief guard’s prison, 11) the chief baker and I both dreamed a dream on the same night; each dream with its own explanation. 12) And there was a young Hebrew man there, a slave of the chief guard. And when we told him, he explained our different dreams to us. 13) And everything happened just as he explained that it would. I got brought back to my job, and the baker got hanged in a tree. |
| יד) וַיִּשְׁלַח פַּרְעֹה וַיִּקְרָא אֶת-יוֹסֵף, וַיְרִיצֻהוּ מִן-הַבּוֹר; וַיְגַלַּח וַיְחַלֵּף שִׂמְלֹתָיו, וַיָּבֹא אֶל-פַּרְעֹה | 14) Par’oh sent for Yosef and they rushed him out of the pit. He shaved and changed his clothes and went to Par’oh. |
| טו) וַיֹּאמֶר פַּרְעֹה, אֶל-יוֹסֵף, חֲלוֹם חָלַמְתִּי, וּפֹתֵר אֵין אֹתוֹ; וַאֲנִי, שָׁמַעְתִּי עָלֶיךָ לֵאמֹר, תִּשְׁמַע חֲלוֹם, לִפְתֹּר אֹתוֹטז) וַיַּעַן יוֹסֵף אֶת-פַּרְעֹה לֵאמֹר, בִּלְעָדָי: אֱלֹהִים, יַעֲנֶה אֶת-שְׁלוֹם פַּרְעֹה | 15) Par’oh said to Yosef, “I dreamed a dream and no one had an explanation for it. But I, I heard about you that when you hear a dream you can always explain it.” 16) Yosef answered Par’oh, “It’s not really me– it is God who answers and tells how things will be for Par’oh.” |
| יז) וַיְדַבֵּר פַּרְעֹה, אֶל-יוֹסֵף: בַּחֲלֹמִי, הִנְנִי עֹמֵד עַל-שְׂפַת הַיְאֹריח) וְהִנֵּה מִן-הַיְאֹר, עֹלֹת שֶׁבַע פָּרוֹת, בְּרִיאוֹת בָּשָׂר, וִיפֹת תֹּאַר; וַתִּרְעֶינָה, בָּאָחוּיט) וְהִנֵּה שֶׁבַע-פָּרוֹת אֲחֵרוֹת, עֹלוֹת אַחֲרֵיהֶן, דַּלּוֹת וְרָעוֹת תֹּאַר מְאֹד, וְרַקּוֹת בָּשָׂר: לֹא-רָאִיתִי כָהֵנָּה בְּכָל-אֶרֶץ מִצְרַיִם, לָרֹעַכ) וַתֹּאכַלְנָה, הַפָּרוֹת, הָרַקּוֹת, וְהָרָעוֹת–אֵת שֶׁבַע הַפָּרוֹת הָרִאשֹׁנוֹת, הַבְּרִיאֹתכא) וַתָּבֹאנָה אֶל-קִרְבֶּנָה, וְלֹא נוֹדַע כִּי-בָאוּ אֶל-קִרְבֶּנָה, וּמַרְאֵיהֶן רַע, כַּאֲשֶׁר בַּתְּחִלָּה; וָאִיקָץ | 17) Par’oh said to Yosef, “In my dream, הִנְנִי hineni– there I was, standing by the bank of the Nile river הַיְאֹר the y’or. 18) And הִנֵּה hineh!- out of the Nile river הַיְאֹר the y’or came seven nice, plump, good-looking cows, and they started eating the reeds by the river. 19) And הִנֵּה hineh!- seven more cows came up after them, and they were skinny and bad-looking– worse than anything I’ve ever seen in the land of Egypt! 20) And the bad-looking cows ate up the first cows, the nice, plump cows. 21) But when they were inside of them you wouldn’t even know that they were inside of them, because they still looked just as skinny and bad as before! And then I woke up. |
| כב) וָאֵרֶא, בַּחֲלֹמִי; וְהִנֵּה שֶׁבַע שִׁבֳּלִים, עֹלֹת בְּקָנֶה אֶחָד–מְלֵאֹת וְטֹבוֹתכג) וְהִנֵּה שֶׁבַע שִׁבֳּלִים, צְנֻמוֹת דַּקּוֹת שְׁדֻפוֹת קָדִים–צֹמְחוֹת, אַחֲרֵיהֶםכד) וַתִּבְלַעְןָ הַשִּׁבֳּלִים הַדַּקֹּת, אֵת שֶׁבַע הַשִּׁבֳּלִים הַטֹּבוֹת; וָאֹמַר, אֶל-הַחַרְטֻמִּים, וְאֵין מַגִּיד, לִי | 22) And then I saw in a dream, and הִנֵּה hineh– there were seven good, plump ears of grain growing on one stalk. 23) And הִנֵּה hineh– seven thin ears of grain, all dried up by the east wind, sprouted up after them. 24) And the thin ears of grain swallowed up the seven good ears of grain. And I told this to the magicians, and no one could tell me anything! |
| כה) וַיֹּאמֶר יוֹסֵף אֶל-פַּרְעֹה, חֲלוֹם פַּרְעֹה אֶחָד הוּא: אֵת אֲשֶׁר הָאֱלֹהִים עֹשֶׂה, הִגִּיד לְפַרְעֹהכו) שֶׁבַע פָּרֹת הַטֹּבֹת, שֶׁבַע שָׁנִים הֵנָּה, וְשֶׁבַע הַשִּׁבֳּלִים הַטֹּבֹת, שֶׁבַע שָׁנִים הֵנָּה: חֲלוֹם, אֶחָד הוּאכז) וְשֶׁבַע הַפָּרוֹת הָרַקּוֹת וְהָרָעֹת הָעֹלֹת אַחֲרֵיהֶן, שֶׁבַע שָׁנִים הֵנָּה, וְשֶׁבַע הַשִּׁבֳּלִים הָרֵקוֹת, שְׁדֻפוֹת הַקָּדִים–יִהְיוּ, שֶׁבַע שְׁנֵי רָעָבכח) הוּא הַדָּבָר, אֲשֶׁר דִּבַּרְתִּי אֶל-פַּרְעֹה: אֲשֶׁר הָאֱלֹהִים עֹשֶׂה, הֶרְאָה אֶת-פַּרְעֹה | 25. Yosef said to Par’oh, “Your highness Par’oh’s dreams are both saying the same thing, and they tell what God will do to Par’oh. The seven good cows are seven years, and the seven good ears of grain are seven years. It’s the same thing in the dreams. 27) And the seven thin, bad-looking cows coming out after them are seven years, and the seven thin ears of grain, all dried out by the east wind, will be seven years of famine. 28) It’s just as I said to your majesty Par’oh- God is showing your majesty Par’oh what God will do. |
| כט) הִנֵּה שֶׁבַע שָׁנִים, בָּאוֹת–שָׂבָע גָּדוֹל, בְּכָל-אֶרֶץ מִצְרָיִםל) וְקָמוּ שֶׁבַע שְׁנֵי רָעָב, אַחֲרֵיהֶן, וְנִשְׁכַּח כָּל-הַשָּׂבָע, בְּאֶרֶץ מִצְרָיִם; וְכִלָּה הָרָעָב, אֶת-הָאָרֶץלא) וְלֹא-יִוָּדַע הַשָּׂבָע בָּאָרֶץ, מִפְּנֵי הָרָעָב הַהוּא אַחֲרֵי-כֵן: כִּי-כָבֵד הוּא, מְאֹדלב) וְעַל הִשָּׁנוֹת הַחֲלוֹם אֶל-פַּרְעֹה, פַּעֲמָיִם–כִּי-נָכוֹן הַדָּבָר מֵעִם הָאֱלֹהִים, וּמְמַהֵר הָאֱלֹהִים לַעֲשֹׂתוֹ | 29) הִנֵּה Hineh- seven years are coming– Seven great, full ones for everyone in Egypt. 30) Then after that there will be seven years of famine/hunger, and no one will be able to even remember being full in Egypt. The famine/hunger will consume (be everywhere) in the land. 31) And no one will feel full (have enough to eat) in the whole land because the famine/hunger will be so very bad. 32) And because the dream was a double dream, and your majesty Par’oh had it in two ways, it means this is really going to happen. God will make it happen soon. |
| לג) וְעַתָּה יֵרֶא פַרְעֹה, אִישׁ נָבוֹן וְחָכָם; וִישִׁיתֵהוּ, עַל-אֶרֶץ מִצְרָיִםלד) יַעֲשֶׂה פַרְעֹה, וְיַפְקֵד פְּקִדִים עַל-הָאָרֶץ; וְחִמֵּשׁ אֶת-אֶרֶץ מִצְרַיִם, בְּשֶׁבַע שְׁנֵי הַשָּׂבָעלה) וְיִקְבְּצוּ, אֶת-כָּל-אֹכֶל הַשָּׁנִים הַטֹּבוֹת, הַבָּאֹת, הָאֵלֶּה; וְיִצְבְּרוּ-בָר תַּחַת יַד-פַּרְעֹה, אֹכֶל בֶּעָרִים—וְשָׁמָרוּ | 33) Now, let Par’oh pick an insightful and wise man, and put him in charge of the land of Egypt. 34) And let Par’oh choose people to supervise everyone in the land and make sure that everyone in the land gives up one fifth of the food they grow in each of the seven good years. 35) Those men should gather up all the food in the good years that are coming soon. They should store up grain in the cities and guard it under Par’oh’s orders. |
| לו) וְהָיָה הָאֹכֶל לְפִקָּדוֹן, לָאָרֶץ, לְשֶׁבַע שְׁנֵי הָרָעָב, אֲשֶׁר תִּהְיֶיןָ בְּאֶרֶץ מִצְרָיִם; וְלֹא-תִכָּרֵת הָאָרֶץ, בָּרָעָב | 36) Then, that food will be stored for the land for when the seven years of famine/hunger that will happen in the land of Egypt– that way the land won’t die from the famine/hunger. |
| לז) וַיִּיטַב הַדָּבָר, בְּעֵינֵי פַרְעֹה, וּבְעֵינֵי, כָּל-עֲבָדָיולח) וַיֹּאמֶר פַּרְעֹה, אֶל-עֲבָדָיו: הֲנִמְצָא כָזֶה–אִישׁ, אֲשֶׁר רוּחַ אֱלֹהִים בּוֹלט) וַיֹּאמֶר פַּרְעֹה אֶל-יוֹסֵף, אַחֲרֵי הוֹדִיעַ אֱלֹהִים אוֹתְךָ אֶת-כָּל-זֹאת, אֵין-נָבוֹן וְחָכָם, כָּמוֹךָמ) אַתָּה תִּהְיֶה עַל-בֵּיתִי, וְעַל-פִּיךָ יִשַּׁק כָּל-עַמִּי; רַק הַכִּסֵּא, אֶגְדַּל מִמֶּךָּ | 37) This seemed like good advice to Par’oh and to all of his servants. 38) Par’oh said, “Can we find a man like that, who has the spirit of God in him? 39) And Par’oh said to Yosef, “Since God made you know all of this, you must be the most insightful and wise person. 40) You will be in charge of my house, and your words will say what my people will do. Only my throne will be above yours.” |
| מא) וַיֹּאמֶר פַּרְעֹה, אֶל-יוֹסֵף: רְאֵה נָתַתִּי אֹתְךָ, עַל כָּל-אֶרֶץ מִצְרָיִםמב) וַיָּסַר פַּרְעֹה אֶת-טַבַּעְתּוֹ מֵעַל יָדוֹ, וַיִּתֵּן אֹתָהּ עַל-יַד יוֹסֵף; וַיַּלְבֵּשׁ אֹתוֹ בִּגְדֵי-שֵׁשׁ, וַיָּשֶׂם רְבִד הַזָּהָב עַל-צַוָּארוֹמג) וַיַּרְכֵּב אֹתוֹ, בְּמִרְכֶּבֶת הַמִּשְׁנֶה אֲשֶׁר-לוֹ, וַיִּקְרְאוּ לְפָנָיו, אַבְרֵךְ; וְנָתוֹן אֹתוֹ, עַל כָּל-אֶרֶץ מִצְרָיִםמד) וַיֹּאמֶר פַּרְעֹה אֶל-יוֹסֵף, אֲנִי פַרְעֹה; וּבִלְעָדֶיךָ, לֹא-יָרִים אִישׁ אֶת-יָדוֹ וְאֶת-רַגְלוֹ–בְּכָל-אֶרֶץ מִצְרָיִםמה) וַיִּקְרָא פַרְעֹה שֵׁם-יוֹסֵף, צָפְנַת פַּעְנֵחַ, וַיִּתֶּן-לוֹ אֶת-אָסְנַת בַּת-פּוֹטִי פֶרַע כֹּהֵן אֹן, לְאִשָּׁה; וַיֵּצֵא יוֹסֵף, עַל-אֶרֶץ מִצְרָיִם | 41) Par’oh said to Yosef, “Look, I put you in charge of the whole land of Egypt.” 42) He took his signet ring off of his hand and put it on Yosef’s hand, and dressed him in fine linen and put a gold chain around his neck. 43) He let him ride in his second chariot, and people called out before him, “Avrech!”(“Bow down!”) And so he put him in charge of all the land of Egypt. 44) Par’oh said to Yosef, “I am Par’oh, and I say that no one will lift a hand or foot without your permission in the whole land of Egypt.” 45) And Par’oh named Yosef Tzophenat Pane’ach, and gave him Osenat, the daughter of Poti-fera the priest of On, as a wife. And Yosef went out over the land of Egypt. |
| מו) וְיוֹסֵף, בֶּן-שְׁלֹשִׁים שָׁנָה, בְּעָמְדוֹ, לִפְנֵי פַּרְעֹה מֶלֶךְ-מִצְרָיִם; וַיֵּצֵא יוֹסֵף מִלִּפְנֵי פַרְעֹה, וַיַּעֲבֹר בְּכָל-אֶרֶץ מִצְרָיִםמז) וַתַּעַשׂ הָאָרֶץ, בְּשֶׁבַע שְׁנֵי הַשָּׂבָע—לִקְמָצִיםמח) וַיִּקְבֹּץ אֶת-כָּל-אֹכֶל שֶׁבַע שָׁנִים, אֲשֶׁר הָיוּ בְּאֶרֶץ מִצְרַיִם, וַיִּתֶּן-אֹכֶל, בֶּעָרִים: אֹכֶל שְׂדֵה-הָעִיר אֲשֶׁר סְבִיבֹתֶיהָ, נָתַן בְּתוֹכָהּ | 46) Now, Yosef was thirty years old when he stood before Par’oh. Yosef went out from before Par’oh and crossed all over the land of Egypt. 47) During the seven years of satisfaction (fullness) the earth made so much. 48) He [Yosef] gathered up all the food of those seven years that was in the land of Egypt, and put the food in cities. The food from the fields around each city, he put into that city. |
| מט) וַיִּצְבֹּר יוֹסֵף בָּר כְּחוֹל הַיָּם, הַרְבֵּה מְאֹד–עַד כִּי-חָדַל לִסְפֹּר, כִּי-אֵין מִסְפָּרנ) וּלְיוֹסֵף יֻלַּד שְׁנֵי בָנִים, בְּטֶרֶם תָּבוֹא שְׁנַת הָרָעָב, אֲשֶׁר יָלְדָה-לּוֹ אָסְנַת, בַּת-פּוֹטִי פֶרַע כֹּהֵן אוֹןנא) וַיִּקְרָא יוֹסֵף אֶת-שֵׁם הַבְּכוֹר, מְנַשֶּׁה: כִּי-נַשַּׁנִי אֱלֹהִים אֶת-כָּל-עֲמָלִי, וְאֵת כָּל-בֵּית אָבִינב) וְאֵת שֵׁם הַשֵּׁנִי, קָרָא אֶפְרָיִם: כִּי-הִפְרַנִי אֱלֹהִים, בְּאֶרֶץ עָנְיִי | 49) And Yosef heaped it up like the sands of the sea– so much that he stopped counting it; it was too much to count. 50) Yosef had two sons before the year of famine/hunger came, with Asenat, the daughter of Poti-fera the priest of On. 41) Yosef called his first son Menashe, because he said, “God has made me forget, נַשַּׁנִי nashani, all my trouble and my father’s house.” 42) The name of the second son he called Efraim, because he said, “God has made me fruitful, הִפְרַנִי hifrani, in the land of my suffering.” |
| נג וַתִּכְלֶינָה, שֶׁבַע שְׁנֵי הַשָּׂבָע, אֲשֶׁר הָיָה, בְּאֶרֶץ מִצְרָיִם נד) וַתְּחִלֶּינָה שֶׁבַע שְׁנֵי הָרָעָב, לָבוֹא, כַּאֲשֶׁר, אָמַר יוֹסֵף; וַיְהִי רָעָב בְּכָל-הָאֲרָצוֹת, וּבְכָל-אֶרֶץ מִצְרַיִם הָיָה לָחֶםנה) וַתִּרְעַב כָּל-אֶרֶץ מִצְרַיִם, וַיִּצְעַק הָעָם אֶל-פַּרְעֹה לַלָּחֶם; וַיֹּאמֶר פַּרְעֹה לְכָל-מִצְרַיִם לְכוּ אֶל-יוֹסֵף, אֲשֶׁר-יֹאמַר לָכֶם תַּעֲשׂוּנו) וְהָרָעָב הָיָה, עַל כָּל-פְּנֵי הָאָרֶץ; וַיִּפְתַּח יוֹסֵף אֶת-כָּל-אֲשֶׁר בָּהֶם, וַיִּשְׁבֹּר לְמִצְרַיִם, וַיֶּחֱזַק הָרָעָב, בְּאֶרֶץ מִצְרָיִםנז) וְכָל-הָאָרֶץ בָּאוּ מִצְרַיְמָה, לִשְׁבֹּר אֶל-יוֹסֵף: כִּי-חָזַק הָרָעָב, בְּכָל-הָאָרֶץ | 53) The seven years of fullness in the land of Egypt ended, 54) and the seven years of hunger/famine started to come just as Yosef had said. There was great hunger/famine in all the lands, but in the whole land of Egypt everyone had bread. 55) When the whole land of Egypt was hungry, the people cried out to Par’oh for bread. Par’oh said to all the Egyptians, “Go to Yosef, and do what he tells you.” 56) And when the famine was all over the land, Yosef opened up everything in them (the cities) and sold to the Egyptians, and the famine was very bad in the land of Egypt. 57) And all the earth came to Egypt to buy from Yosef, because the famine was so bad on the whole earth. |
