The children in Nitzanim v’Anafim (“Buds” for 1st-2nd grades and “Branches” for 3rd grade) always get excited about trying out new art materials, and that excitement was BURSTING out of them when we started using chalk pastels last week – so much so that we just had to continue with them this week!

Children were exclaiming across the studio about new ways of using the chalk pastels, and how thrilled they were with the art they were able to make. “This is absolutely BEAUTIFUL!” one third grader said, holding up his artwork for everyone to see.

Several children who previously have not been interested in making abstract art were inspired by the way sponges allowed them to blend and create texture, and showed their ideas in ways they never had before! It’s so exciting to find a material that brings out something new – new questions, new ideas, and new confidence in ourselves as artists!
