Here is the Torah text that children are exploring during Week 1 of our Yosef (Joseph) theme.
Ya’akov lived in the land of Cana’an. This is the story of Ya’akov and all his family. |
ב) אֵלֶּה תֹּלְדוֹת יַעֲקֹב, יוֹסֵף בֶּן-שְׁבַע-עֶשְׂרֵה שָׁנָה הָיָה רֹעֶה אֶת-אֶחָיו בַּצֹּאן, וְהוּא נַעַר אֶת-בְּנֵי בִלְהָה וְאֶת-בְּנֵי זִלְפָּה, נְשֵׁי אָבִיו; וַיָּבֵא יוֹסֵף אֶת-דִּבָּתָם רָעָה אֶל-אֲבִיהֶם | When Ya’akov’s son Yosef was 17 years old, he helped tend his father’s flocks with his brothers. Yosef would bring bad reports about his brothers to their father. |
ג) וְיִשְׂרָאֵל אָהַב אֶת-יוֹסֵף מִכָּל-בָּנָיו–כִּי-בֶן-זְקֻנִים הוּא לוֹ; וְעָשָׂה לוֹ כְּתֹנֶת פַּסִּים | Now Ya’akov loved Yosef best of all his sons, for Yosef was the child of his old age. Ya’akov made him a tunic with many colors. |
Then his brothers saw that their father loved Yosef best of any of them |
וַיִּשְׂנְאוּ אֹתוֹ | and they hated him |
וְלֹא יָכְלוּ דַּבְּרוֹ לְשָׁלֹם | and could not speak a friendly word to him. |
And Yosef dreamed a dream |
וַיַּגֵּד לְאֶחָיו; וַיּוֹסִפוּ עוֹד שְׂנֹא אֹתוֹ | and told it to his brothers, and they hated him even more. |
He said to them, “Listen to this dream I dreamed: |
ז) וְהִנֵּה אֲנַחְנוּ מְאַלְּמִים אֲלֻמִּים בְּתוֹךְ הַשָּׂדֶה | And הִנֵה there we were, tying up bundles (sheaves) of grain in the field, |
וְהִנֵּה קָמָה אֲלֻמָּתִי וְגַם-נִצָּבָה | and הִנֵה {sharp intake of breath}, my bundle rose up, it was standing up, |
וְהִנֵּה תְסֻבֶּינָה אֲלֻמֹּתֵיכֶם וַתִּשְׁתַּחֲוֶיןָ לַאֲלֻמָּתִי | and הִנֵה your bundles got in a circle around it and bowed down to my bundle.” |
His brothers said, “Do you mean to be king, to rule over us?” |
And they hated him even more, because of his dreams and because of his words. |
But Yosef dreamed another dream |
וַיְסַפֵּר אֹתוֹ לְאֶחָיו; וַיֹּאמֶר | and told it to his father and his brothers, saying, |
I dreamed another dream, and הִנֵה the sun and moon and eleven stars were bowing down to me.” |
י) וַיְסַפֵּר אֶל-אָבִיו וְאֶל-אֶחָיו וַיִּגְעַר-בּוֹ אָבִיו וַיֹּאמֶר לוֹ מָה הַחֲלוֹם הַזֶּה אֲשֶׁר חָלָמְתָּ: הֲבוֹא נָבוֹא, אֲנִי וְאִמְּךָ וְאַחֶיךָ, לְהִשְׁתַּחֲוֹת לְךָ אָרְצָה | His father scolded him, saying, “What is this dream you have dreamed? Are we going to come – I and your mother and your brothers – to bow down to you, to the ground?” |
And his brothers felt jealous, and his father remembered the dream. |
