A Sukkah for Anafim (“Branches” for 2nd-3rd)

“Imagine that there’s no COVID and all of Anafim (“Branches” for 2nd-3rd grades) is huddled in a sukkah, and we’re cozy in our sleeping bags, and maybe Morah Sara and Morah Maisie snuck you a s’more. What would you want it to feel like in the sukkah?”

Sounds like a dream, right? Well, Anafim thought so, too.

This week, children in Anafim connected the holiday of Sukkot with their hopes for our community. We asked them to imagine how we’d like our dreamworld sukkah–and by extension, our community–to feel this year. Then, children created a representation of their feeling.

Here are some of the feelings children shared:

  • “Animals make me feel curious.”
  • “Books make me feel calm.”
  • “I have a dog right there. And this is my family and this is our house. I was thinking about happy.”
  • “You should be friendly while you’re hanging out with friends.”

An Anafim sukkah filled with curiosity, calm, happiness, and friendliness? That sounds like a gorgeous place to be! While our sukkah may be metaphorical, I am so excited to work with you to create an online space that is curious, calm, happy, and friendly. What a beautiful start!
