Adonai said to Moshe,

Send men to scout the land of Cana’an, which I am giving to the Israelites. Send one person from each one of the tribes, and all of them should be important people from their tribes.

So Moshe sent them out from the wilderness of Paran, as Adonai had said. All of them were leaders from the Israelites.

These were their names: From the tribe of Reuven, … 5 From the tribe of Shimon…, 6 from the tribe of Yehuda, Calev ben Jephunneh; 7 from the tribe of Yissachar, I… ;8 from the tribe of Ephraim, Hoshea bin Nun; 9 from the tribe of Binyamin, …; 10 from the tribe of Zevulun, … 11 from the tribe of Yosef, (that is, from the tribe of Menashe), … 12 from the tribe of Dan, … 13 from the tribe of Asher, …14 from the tribe of Naphtali, …15 from the tribe of Gad, …

Those were the names of the men whom Moshe sent out to scout the land. (Moshe called Hoshea bin Nun “Yehoshua”).

Moshe sent them out to scout the land of Cana’an. He said to them: Go up there into the Negev, 18 and go up into the mountains. Look at the land, and see what it’s like. And what the people are like, who live there: are they strong or weak? Are there few of them, or many? 19 And what is the land that they’re living on like? Is it a good land, or a bad land? And what are their cities like, that they live in: are they open camps or walled up forts? 20 And what is the soil like: is it rich soil for growing foods, or thin? Are there trees there, or not? And be bold, and take some of the fruit that grows in the land. (At the time, it was the season for the first ripe grapes.)

So they went up to scout the land, from the wilderness of Tzin to Rechov, near Levo-Chamat. 22 And they went up through the Negev and reached Chevron,

And they came to the Wadi of Eshcol. They cut down one branch with one bunch (one eshkol!) of grapes from there, and also pomegranates and figs. They carried it on a pole held between two of them. 24 (And so that place was called the Wadi of Eshkol because of the bunch, or “eshkol”, of grapes that the Israelites cut from there.
