This week in 3rd – 5th grade Anafim (“Branches”), children struggled to understand what Judaism was like when the Temple in Jerusalem stood. Sacrifices, priests, no (or few) synagogues and rabbis – it was all so different from what we know today. We had to help each other understand this very different way of life.
1. We read background information and texts from the Torah. We drew and wrote about our ideas.
2. In response to a child’s question, “Why was the Temple in Jerusalem?,” another child gave a spontaneous lecture about the Fertile Crescent, and the Tigris and Euphrates Rivers.
3. We built. As we imagined scenes at the Temple, we talked with peers about what it might have been like at the Temple.
4. We asked MORE questions!
Next week, we’ll tackle new texts, build more scenes, and ask more questions to try to understand what it might have been like at the Temple!
