Genesis 40:1-23 (Yosef in Prison) for 1st-5th

1

1) Awhile later, the king of Egypt’s cupbearer (he was the person who brought Par’oh’s wine to him) and the baker offended their master the king of Egypt. 2) Par’oh got angry at these two officers, the chief cupbearer and the chief baker. 3) He put them in prison in the chief guard’s prison, where Yosef was in prison. 4) The chief guard made Yosef in charge of them, and he took care of them, and they were there in the prison for awhile.

2

5) Then, both of them– the cupbearer and the baker of the king of Egypt– dreamed a dream, each person his own dream, on the same night, and each dream had its own meaning. 6) When Yosef came in to check on them in the morning, הִנָּם hinam– they were worried.

3

7) He asked Par’oh’s two officers, who were with him in their master’s prison, “Why do you look so unhappy today?” 8) They said to him, “We dreamed dreams, and there’s no one to explain them.” Yosef said, “Don’t all explanations come from God? Please tell them to me.”

4

9) The chief cupbearer told Yosef his dream. He said, “In my dream, הִנֵּה hinei – there was a grapevine before me. 10) On the vine there were three branches. It flowered and buds came up, and its bunches of grapes ripened. 11) And Par’oh’s cup was in my hand, and I took the grapes and I squeezed them into Par’oh’s cup and I put the cup into Par’oh’s hand.”

5

12) Yosef said to him, “This is its explanation: the three branches mean three days. 13) Three days from now, Par’oh will lift your head and give you your job back, and you will get to hand Par’oh’s cup to him just like you used to do when you were his cupbearer.

6

14) Now, when this good thing happens to you, please remember me and be kind to me and let Par’oh know about me and help get me out of this place. 15) Because I was indeed stolen from the land of the Hebrews, and here also, I didn’t do anything to deserve getting put into the pit.”

7

16) The baker saw that the explanation for that dream was good, so he said to Yosef, “In MY dream, there were three bread-baskets stacked on my head. 17) In the basket on top, there were all kinds of baked things for Par’oh to eat. But birds were eating them out of the basket on my head!”

8

18) Yosef answered, “This is its explanation. The three baskets mean three days. 19) Three days from now, Par’oh will lift your head… right off of your body! He’ll hang you in a tree and birds will eat you up.”

9

20) Three days later, it was Par’oh’s birthday, and he had a party with all his subjects. He lifted up the heads of the chief cupbearer and chief baker from the rest of his subjects. 21) He gave the chief cupbearer his cupbearing job back, and he got to hand Par’oh his cup again. 22) But he hung up the baker in a tree just as Yosef had explained it would happen.

10

23) But the chief cupbearer did not remember about Yosef. He forgot all about him.
