Ya’akov (Jacob) lived in the land of Cana’an. This is the story of Ya’akov and all his family. |
2 |
When Ya’akov’s son Yosef (Joseph) was 17 years old, he helped tend his father’s flocks with his brothers. Yosef would bring bad reports about his brothers to their father. |
3 |
Now Ya’akov loved Yosef best of all his sons, for Yosef was the child of his old age. Ya’akov made him a tunic with many colors. |
4 |
Then his brothers saw that their father loved Yosef best of any of them |
5 |
and they hated him |
6 |
and could not speak a friendly word to him. |
7 |
And Yosef dreamed a dream |
8 |
and told it to his brothers, and they hated him even more. |
9 |
He said to them, “Listen to this dream I dreamed: |
10 |
And הִנֵה there we were, tying up bundles (sheaves) of grain in the field, |
11 |
and הִנֵה {sharp intake of breath}, my bundle rose up, it was standing up, |
12 |
and הִנֵה your bundles got in a circle around it and bowed down to my bundle.” |
13 |
His brothers said, “Do you mean to be king, to rule over us?” |
14 |
And they hated him even more, because of his dreams and because of his words. |
15 |
But Yosef dreamed another dream |
16 |
and told it to his father and his brothers, saying, |
17 |
I dreamed another dream, and הִנֵה the sun and moon and eleven stars were bowing down to me.” |
18 |
His father scolded him, saying, “What is this dream you have dreamed? Are we going to come – I and your mother and your brothers – to bow down to you, to the ground?” |
19 |
And his brothers felt jealous, and his father remembered the dream. |
