This week in Shorashim we began our new theme of הלל (Hallel)! We started reading a new story about Daniel in the Lion’s Den, which is one of our many examples we will see of a הלל (Hallel) moment. In Shorashim we have begun thinking about what this story is about and how the different characters might feel. So many of us had immediate reactions to Daniel’s punishment as one child said “that’s not nice, you can’t just throw him into the lion’s den!” and many of us agreed that it wasn’t nice at all. Many Shorashimers also agreed that Daniel was “sad, mad, and scared” when he was thrown in with the lion’s and must have felt very happy when he didn’t get eaten. We also talked about how King Darius may have felt and one child said that “the king didn’t want Daniel there and was happy when he didn’t get eaten because he was sad when Daniel was gone.” In addition to discussing the story, some Shorashimers were excited to draw a picture of what they thought it was about. We will continue exploring more about Daniel next week.
In addition to beginning our new theme, we also worked on some pretty difficult ivrit challenges during זמן חקירה (zeman chakirah–exploration time) throughout this week. We spent a lot of time creating our special שמות(shemot-names) out of play dough, wiki sticks, and aleph bet shape sticks. Some of us even started creating the שמות(shemot-names) of our חברים (chaverim-friends). This was the first time many of us had spent such focused time figuring out how to create all of the אותיות (otiot-letters) in our שם (shem-name). Check back in next week as we continue exploring הלל (Hallel) and try even more ivrit challenges!

One shorashimer finds all of the letters in his שם (shem-name) and creates them from aleph bet shape sticks.
