Hebrew Stencils in Shorashim

It was so simple. I stenciled each child’s Hebrew שם (shem – name) onto paper and offered the children oil and chalk pastels. In a room full of slightly mysterious Jewish pictures and materials, children entering Shorashim for the first time took comfort in the known task of coloring.

Yet what a rich experience we had! Children explored the sounds of their Hebrew שמות (shemot – names), started to notice the shapes of Hebrew letters, and loved getting to know our novel drawing materials. And when our שם (shem – name) cards were done, children felt ready to venture over to new toys and Jewish objects.
