Meet Our Education Team

Staci AkselrodIMG_5689

Staci Akselrod is extremely excited to start working with the Enrichment Center this year, and to spend this year co-learning in a Jewish environment.  She recently completed a year of service with AVODAH: The Jewish Service Corps, here in Chicago, where she spent her time learning about and practicing Jewish social justice.  She graduated from Hampshire College in 2012, where her studies focused on Yiddish theatre and other forms of Jewish literature.  In her spare time, she is a roller derby referee and loves spinning and knitting.

Amy Barriger can’t wait to begin her first year working with the Jewish Enrichment Center as the Shalom Chaverim educator. She graduated from Cornell University in 2011 with a degree in Textile and Apparel Design/Management. During the week, she works at Bright Horizons of Evanston as a teacher, puppeteer, painter, seamstress, scientist, engineer and musician in the two year old classroom. She is a member and the chair of social action at Congregation Or Chadash. In her spare time, Amy loves making and decorating cupcakes, exploring Chicago, and searching for great children’s books.

Hi y’all, my name is Liv (aka: Morah Naomi). I’m back! But for those of you who don’t know me yet… I’m a KU grad with a degree in Textile Design and Art History. Working with my hands (sculpting, sewing, dying, painting) is my passion, right along with teaching others about how art/design can enhance their lives – everyday. Last year it was extraordinary to watch our children grow and learn new ways of expression through visual means. I can’t wait to experience another year at the Jewish Enrichment Center with our returning and new families! Yay!

Rebecca Milder

Now entering her third year as Director of the Jewish Enrichment Center, Rabbi Rebecca remains endlessly IMG_5710fascinated by our children’s ideas about Judaism and amazed by the power of our community to fashion meaningful Jewish experiences. Rabbi Rebecca is a long-time Jewish educator whose experience and passion lies in designing innovative Jewish learning opportunities. She spent her childhood on a bike, adored her years running around the woods with kids doing Jewish environmental education and ropes course work, and wrote a super geeky thesis on decision-making in Jewish law in rabbinical school. And yes, Rabbi Rebecca now does tung soo with the rest of her family, and will test for her yellow belt alongside her five-year-old daughter in November.

Sara Sandmel

I grew up in Hyde Park and just returned this year to work with the Jewish Enrichment Center. In May I graduated from Macalester College, where I studied Religious Studies and Women’s, Gender and Sexuality Studies, focusing on Jewish ritual and feminist and queer theories.  In my free time I play frisbee and ride bicycles to anywhere I can swim. I’ve taught religious school since 12th grade and I’m really excited to start work at the Jewish Enrichment Center!

Hinda Young

Hello! I’m thrilled to be in Hyde Park this year living with my grandfather and teaching at the Jewish Enrichment IMG_5704Center. Formerly an east coast girl I’ve lived in New York, Montreal, and Connecticut with brief stays in Beit Shemesh, Israel and Rome, Italy. I love old things: archeology, Greek mythology and particularly ancient Jewish history. When not learning languages and traveling I am happiest when cooking and sharing large Shabbat dinners with family and friends. A coffee drinking yogi, I hope to build roots in the Jewish Enrichment Center and Hyde Park community.
