The Magic of Processing Time

Today, one of our Nitzanimers began using “inventive spelling” to write Hebrew words. It’s a process he knows well from school. He figured out which letter he needed for a particular sound by singing through the alef-bet. It was a lot of singing! When he didn’t find the “ee” sound in the alef-bet, he said, “Oh!” and told me he knew it would be a dot because months ago, preparing for a Sukkot puppet show, I had told him that vowels in Hebrew are the dots and lines.

And it didn’t go unnoticed. Another first grader came over and stayed for several minutes. I let her know that I believed that she could spell Hebrew words, too. She looked at me and said, “I know.” It won’t be long before she’s spelling Hebrew words, too!
