More Purim Fun!

This week Shorashim had some more Purim fun! We continued to play with the Purim character puppets from last week. And then we made our own!  How excited we were to make our own versions of King Achashverosh, Queen Esther, Mordechai, and Haman. Some children used a template for each character. Others used a blank …

Shorashim Begins to Explore Purim!

This week Shorashim began to explore the holiday of Purim! In dramatic play, we held a סעודה (seudah – festive meal) for our friends!  First we tidied up and swept out all of the dust. Then we cooked some food. We poured drinks. And finally we sat down to our delicious meal! But of course …

Shorashim Plants for Tu B’Shevat!

On Tu B’Shevat we celebrate the birthday of the trees!  One traditional way to celebrate is by planting.  We did some pretend planting… And look!  We had some trees… …and an apple grow! Later, we did some real planting! First, we added some dirt. Next, we put in some seeds! Then we covered the seeds …

My kind of play

There is so much joy in being able to choose how you want to play and explore! Some of us just LOVE to show our ideas with glue and paint and paper. Others of us like to get our hands into sand to dive for Hebrew letters. We might really love to sort and feel …

I did it my way

Something incredible happened today. A confident, independent, capable, AMAZING three-year-old (because all three-year-olds are all of those things and so many more!) found a bucket of Hebrew banana-gram tiles. And she started to match the tiles to a set of Hebrew magnets. And she created a system for herself to put the used banana-gram …

Shorashim Shabbat

It’s time for Shabbat! The guests are coming over soon! It’s time to polish the candlesticks. And dust the furniture. And cook a Shabbat soup. The sun is setting, and it’s getting dark. Time to light the נרות (nerot–candles) and cover our eyes. Now it’s grape juice time. Finally, let’s cut up the challah.  Dinner time. Chicken …

Shabbat!

We’ve started our new theme–Shabbat! There are SO MANY ways to play Shabbat with our Shorashim friends! We’ve been getting Shabbat dinner ready in the מִטְבָּח (mitbach–kitchen). We’ve built houses to have our Shabbat in. We stamped the letters of Shabbat, ש shin, ב bet, ת tav  and found ש shin, ב bet, ת tav in the sensory …

Chanukkah Joy

Gather around! It’s time to light the נרות (nerot–candles) for Chanukkah. How wonderful to be able to celebrate Chanukkah together over the last week, cozy together as the נרות (nerot–candles) burned. We’ve played competitive games of סביבון (sevivon–dreidel). Created our own beeswax נרות (nerot–candles) to take home. And even made special Chanukkah-shaped עגיות (ugiyot–cookies). We hope your …

Chanukkah Everywhere!

We see חנוכה (Chanukkah) everywhere! “Look a menorah!” “Another menorah! It has a helper candle.” We weren’t sure about this one because it looked a little different, but then we counted. It had שמונה (shmoneh–eight) places for נרות (nerot–candles) and one place for the שמש (shamash–helper candle). Must be a חנוכייה (chanukkiyah–Chanukkah menorah). A סביבון (sevivon–dreidel), too! We even had a Chanukkah …
