Chanukkah Everywhere!

We see חנוכה (Chanukkah) everywhere! “Look a menorah!” “Another menorah! It has a helper candle.” We weren’t sure about this one because it looked a little different, but then we counted. It had שמונה (shmoneh–eight) places for נרות (nerot–candles) and one place for the שמש (shamash–helper candle). Must be a חנוכייה (chanukkiyah–Chanukkah menorah). A סביבון (sevivon–dreidel), too! We even had a Chanukkah …

A Curious Visit to the Torah

Shorashimers are naturally curious. There’s so much joy in exploring new things! Our recent visit to see the torah was filled with wonder and excitement! Where’s the torah? “Is it under here?” “What’s that thing?” Oof how does this open? We found it! “Is this a table?” “Soft” “So heavy.” “This is like a finger …

Welcoming Shorashim Guests

Shteelim (‘saplings’ for kindergarten) had decided that Avraham, one of the characters from Genesis 18, is welcoming and friendly because of how Avraham treats the 3 men. It was time to see what it might be like for us to welcome guests: “Shorashim (‘roots’ for Nursery) is coming to visit us! What can we do …

There’s something new in Beit Shorashim! What is it?!? “Sprinkles!” (Also known as colored rice!) There are so many ways to play and learn in our sprinkles. We can practice sharing: “You can use this one.” We can count in Hebrew to figure out the number of scoops it takes to fill the cup all …

Shorashim Welcomes Some “Guests”

This week Shorashim read in Genesis 18 about how Avraham received three unexpected guests.  Before we read on to find out how Avraham treated his guests, we imagined what we would do if we were to welcome three unexpected guests.  In fact, we actually welcomed three “guests,” into our room in the form of three …

Shorashim Loves to Play with Otiyot!

This week Shorashim could not get enough of our new אותיות (otiyot – Hebrew letters) materials! We brought in a large magnet board so we could play with our magnetic  אותיות (otiyot – Hebrew letters), and boy did our Shorashimers come up with some fun ways to play, starting with putting the  אותיות (otiyot – Hebrew letters) in …

Shorashim Celebrates Simchat Torah with the Torah!

All this week, Shorashim celebrated Simchat Torah.  On Simchat Torah, we finish the end of the last book of the Torah, and start all over again at the beginning.  This holiday is typically celebrated with song, dance, and yup, you guessed it, the Torah! But what exactly is the Torah that we talk (and sing) …

Shorashim Design a Torah

This week Shorashim (“Roots” for Nursery) explored the Torah to celebrate Simchat Torah! We arranged shapes on the projector to look at ways we could dress the Torah. And we discovered that we could use the projector in so many different ways to add to our play! We could project the Torah on ourselves We …

Genesis 18:1-10 for Nursery and Kindergarten

1    Adonai appeared to him at the oak-trees of Mamre. Avraham was sitting at the opening of his tent as the day grew cham.  2    He lifted up his einayim – and- hineh!  He saw shalosh men standing there in front of him! He ran out of the opening of his tent to meet them. He …
