Resting the Land and Our Bodies

This week as Shorashimers became more familiar with the basic ideas of farming, we shifted our focus to the idea of rest during the שמיטה (Sh’mitah-release) year. We have had a lot of questions about why the land needs a rest and how we can prepare for this rest during the שמיטה (Sh’mitah-release) year. To …

Beginning our new theme: שמיטה (Sh’mitah)

This week, Shorashimers began learning about our new theme together. We began the week by sharing any ideas we knew about farming with each other and then read a story to learn more about שמיטה (Sh’mitah-release). We learned that שמיטה (Sh’mitah-release) occurs every seven years, and during the שמיטה (Sh’mitah-release) year all agricultural activity stops and the land has …

Getting Ready for Seder

After a few weeks away from each other, it was so nice to be back together as a community this week. With פסח (Pesach-Passover) just a few days away, there was a lot to do in Shorashim to get ready. During משחקים (Mischakim-games) we made sure we really remembered the items on the Seder plate …

Shorashim makes Seder plates

This week before Pesach (Passover), Shorashim finished making their very own Seder plates to take home!  We started out with blank white plates.  In Yetzirah, Morah Miriam used contact paper to block off circles to leave white spaces for all the items that go on the Seder plate.  Then Shorashim used special paint used for …

Learning מה נשתנה (Ma Nishtana) in Shorashim

This week in Shorashim, we have been focused on continuing to learn the names of Seder plate items through משחקים (Mischakim-games), יצירה (Yetzirah-art/creativity), and in our environment. Setting the table for a פסח (Pesach-passover) Seder complete with four cups of grape juice for each person has been a huge favorite for children. To continue this exploration …

Our environment has up new pictures, and we have lots of different new games and explorations out to get inside of this holiday. Our big focus for nursery children is learning what a Seder is and knowing some of the different items on …

Purim is Live!

During כיבוד (Kibud-snack) this week, we read a brief version of the Purim story in Beit Shorashim. Even though this wasn’t the main focus of our Purim exploration together, it lead to so much excitement surrounding the holiday for children. We started booing together when we heard Haman’s name in the story and as we were reading …

We can’t wait to show you some of what we have worked on! We have now shifted into spending time inside of Purim together over the next few …

Closing Out Our Exodus Story

This week in Shorashim we finished the last part of our story from שמות (Shmot-Exodus). It has been an incredible journey watching the way three and four year olds have developed their ideas and been able to converse with each other, respectfully disagree, grow conversational skills, and questions each others ideas. This week we finished the …

Thinking About the Ten Plagues

This week Shorashimers (nursery) heard about the rest of the Ten Plagues, which brought up a lot of questions and ideas among them. In the story we heard about the death of the firstborn creating “ a loud cry through the land of Egypt, that has never been heard before and will never be that …
