Making our Omer calendar

It’s that time of the year.  Since we are in Pesach (Passover), we at the Jewish Enrichment Center started to think about how we were going to count the Omer this year.  The Omer is the period of 49 days that some Jews count between Pesach (Passover) and Shavuot.  Pesach (Passover) is the way in …

Mah Nishtanah Madness and Other Pesach Prep

A Shteelimer holds up her Mah Nishtanah banner.

This week in Shteelim, we had nonstop singing, making art about, and playing with מה נשתנה (Mah Nishtanah – The Four Questions). We finished making our fabric banners in יצירתיות (Yetzirah – creativity), which show each of the four questions as represented by the items that are different: מצה (matzah), מרור (maror), שתי פעמים (shtei f’amim – (dip) twice), and מְסֻבִּין …

Getting Ready for Seder

A four year olds writes the name of the Seder plate items on his plate.

After a few weeks away from each other, it was so nice to be back together as a community this week. With פסח (Pesach-Passover) just a few days away, there was a lot to do in Shorashim to get ready. During משחקים (Mischakim-games) we made sure we really remembered the items on the Seder plate …

Shorashim makes Seder plates

This week before Pesach (Passover), Shorashim finished making their very own Seder plates to take home!  We started out with blank white plates.  In Yetzirah, Morah Miriam used contact paper to block off circles to leave white spaces for all the items that go on the Seder plate.  Then Shorashim used special paint used for …

Shteelim Connect the Seder Plate to the Exodus Story

photo (21)

Over the past two weeks in Shteelim, we’ve started a full exploration of פסח (Pesach—Passover). Kindergarteners have been working on  מה נשתנה (Ma Nishtanah -The Four Questions) in new משחקים (Mischakim-games), making a fabric banner יצירה (Yetzirah-art/creativity), and lots of singing as we walk or play. Most Shteelimers will be ready to sing the מה נשתנה (Mah Nishtanah …

Nitzanim Celebrates Pesach in India

Nitzanimers are learning a little bit about the way that Jewish people living in Cochin, India celebrate פסח (Pesach—Passover). We are spending the rest of this week creating a בית (bayit—house) in India and filling it with all of the things we might need for a seder so that we can celebrate after spring break. …

HaSefer Sheli (My Book)

At some point this past week your child(ren) probably brought home a whole mess of totally awesome stuff they created at the Jewish Enrichment Center over the past year. One of them most definitely was their HaSefer Sheli. They completed this book in Yetzirah to review all those great things they learned and remember fun …

Shorashim Hides and Finds the Afikomen

Photo Apr 20, 9 44 16 AM

Shorashim had a fantastic week as we celebrated the end of פסח (Pesach – Passover).  To honor the last two days, we didn’t write or draw or use electronics, leaving us with fewer pictures than usual; but that doesn’t mean we were any less busy or having any less fun! As we’ve mentioned over the …

Nitzanim Celebrates Together

To mark the last two days of Pesach as chag (a special holiday day), Nitzanim did a few things differently.  We put away our markers and our normal favorite Yetzirah supplies. Instead, we worked together to mark those days as uniquely special. Since it was chag, we don’t have any pictures of the days themselves, …

Let’s Start Counting!

It’s that time again! Starting the second night of Pesach we count 7 weeks or 49 days until the next holiday, Shavuot. This is called the Counting of the Omer. At the Jewish Enrichment Center we count together during Shirah/Tfillah at the end of each day with a hand made calendar. Shorashim, Nitzanim and Anafim …
