We can all learn from each other

All year long we work with the children to activate a sense of community. We can all learn from each other, we say. We practice listening and sharing what we heard our peer say. We practice building with a partner to expose our initial ideas about text to other perspectives. We practice playing Hebrew games together and holding each other …

My, how you’ve grown!

“Another yellow one? What?!?” I overheard two children, a first grader and a kindergartener whispering to each other as they worked to match popsicle sticks labeled with צבעים (tzeva’im–colors) to colored felt pouches. They were getting stuck. “Try again,” I said, “There’s only one stick for each צבע (tzeva–color).” “Let’s start over,” one of them said …

One text, many interpretations

Isn’t it amazing how just two פסוקים (pesukim–verse) of Torah text can inspire so many different interpretations? Today, Nitzanim encountered the following two verses from Deuteronomy 5:   יג  שֵׁשֶׁת יָמִים תַּעֲבֹד, וְעָשִׂיתָ כָּל-מְלַאכְתֶּךָ. 13 Work for six days and do all your work;

Once upon a time…

… there were 12 Nitzanim children who LOVED reading Shabbat stories, but not just any Shabbat stories, stories with magic in them. “Can we read another story at כיבוד (kibud–snack)?” they would say to Morah Sara. Morah Sara heard the children talking about the storytelling that they do at school: “I filled my black and …

Light and Calm

Can you feel it? Can you tell, just by looking at the photo, that something shifted inside of our bodies when we saw the נרות (nerot–candles) in a quiet, dark room? In Nitzanim, we’ve been trying to feel Shabbat. In past weeks, we’ve tried to feel the chaos of getting ready for Shabbat, or the calm of …

Darkness

Nitzanim children have been exploring what Shabbat might feel like. We’ve been testing out so many different ways to imagine or experience Shabbat feelings. We’ve been reading stories, practicing guided meditation, playing together, and more! Today, children explored the connection between Shabbat and night time. Are the feelings we associate with night and darkness connected to Shabbat? …

Magnets

Yesterday, I watched as all five children chose to sit at the same שולחן (shulchan–table) to work on their Hebrew challenges. I wish I had a picture to share! Only a few children were actually working on the same challenge, but they all wanted to be together. Just in the short time that we’ve been back from …

Chanukkah Joy

Gather around! It’s time to light the נרות (nerot–candles) for Chanukkah. How wonderful to be able to celebrate Chanukkah together over the last week, cozy together as the נרות (nerot–candles) burned. We’ve played competitive games of סביבון (sevivon–dreidel). Created our own beeswax נרות (nerot–candles) to take home. And even made special Chanukkah-shaped עגיות (ugiyot–cookies). We hope your …

Some clues

I can’t believe that it’s the week before winter break. It feels like we were just beginning the year with the Opening Picnic! And yet, when I look around Beit Nitzanim, there are so many clues that actually, we’ve been together for a while and we’ve learned so much and worked so hard to be a community …
