Chanukah is Coming to Beit Nitzanim

We’ve started to talk about Chanukah in Beit Nitzanim. Before we jump into the Chanukah stories, we spent some time today refreshing our Chanukah vocabulary בעברית (b’Ivrit—in Hebrew). We made some common symbols with our גופים (gufim—bodies). A סביבון (sevivon—dreidel): A חנוכייה (chanukiyah—Chanukah menorah): A נר (ner—candle): We also cracked codes and practiced our script …

Nitzanim & Tzeva’im (Colors)

Nitzanim has been coming up with awesome ideas for bringing light to other people, the Jewish Enrichment Center, and 5200 S Hyde Park! Lately they’ve made cake and delivered the goodies with a message “We made these for you! We thought it would bring light to you!” They also made an Alef-Bet chart and a …

Happy Chanukah from Shorashim!

Chanukah finally arrived and Shorashim could not have been more excited! We honored the arrival of the holiday in many different ways. Some friends decided to independently (without any prompts from the morah) draw their own chanukkiah.   One friend put his up on the wall for everyone to see.  He specifically drew 7 flames …

On Bringing Light Where it is Dark

This Hannukah we talked a lot about bringing light where it is dark and using our Hannukah נרות (nerot, candles) to help us. Nitzanim drew pictures of how each of us could bring light where it is dark and together we built a beautiful חנוכיה (channukiah) to share with the rest of the Jewish Enrichment Center.  We …

Chanukah is Coming to Shorashim!

Shorashim geared up for the upcoming start of Chanukah this week with many different Chanukah themed activities.   We did some dreidel spin art with Morah Naomi in Yetzirah.   We got a little more creative with our Chanukkah art and used not only dreidels, but נרות (nerot – candles) as well.  You can read more …

A whirlwind week in Anafim

This week in Anafim we had a million and a half things to work on. In between our regular Ivrit (Hebrew) work and routine activities, we also found ourselves scrambling to finish our special Chanukah project (a light box combining pictures of our families and beautiful Chanukiot we drew). Additionally, this past week we got …

Dreidel, Dreidel, Dreidel

There were lots of ways to explore the dreidel this week in Shalom Chaverim. Some of the youngest children were very interested in exploring a discovery box filled with dreidels of different shapes, textures, and sizes. One child slowly built up her courage to reach a hand into the box– she made small, tentative movements …

Shorashimers Become Maccabees

This week in Shorashim we got inside the story of Chanukkah by becoming Maccabees.   First, we made Judah Maccabee shields.   Many Shorahsimers were excited because the nickname of Maccabee (meaning hammer) reminded them of some of their favorite superheroes.   Whether we were superhero fans or not, every Shorashimer agreed that anything by …

Sharing the Chanukah spirit in beit Anafim

As the winds of Kislev (the month on the Hebrew, lunar calendar) blow and Chanukah approaches, the air in Beit Anafim is filled with anticipation and excitement. This past Tuesday we sought to bring the Chanukah magic into Beit Anafim. That feeling when the sun has set and you are safe inside gathered with your …

Why Do We Eat סופגנייות (sufganiot, donuts) on Hannukah?

In Nitzanim we dove into Hannukah this week, with lots of new things to explore and create. A highlight, for obvious reasons, was making סופגנייות (sufganiot, donuts) together on Tuesday. The children had some interesting ideas about why we might eat them on this particular winter holiday: “They’re like presents and you can give them to …
