We Have A Lot of Choice as Jews

In 3rd – 5th grade Anafim (“Branches”), we are considering our role at the seder. What can we do as 3rd – 5th grade children to make the seder fun and memorable for us and our families? We’re learning new parts to lead at the seder. Lots of us have younger siblings who will sing the Four Questions …

Voice and Choice

When children get to make decisions about how they work and what they create, they build knowledge and learn self-management skills. Also, we’re all happy. This week, our 3rd – 5th grade Anafim (“Branches”) children buzzed with purpose, drive, and joy as we recalled so much knowledge about Pesach (Passover).   It felt wonderful to review Exodus 1 …

What We Do To Unwind

Wow! We have worked hard for seven weeks to explore יוסף (Yosef – Joseph) in the Torah. From wrestling with how brothers could sell another brother into slavery, to feeling renewed determination to stand up for others in tough situations (born out of a heated classroom conversation about whether or not the character of Reuven was brave), we are closing this …

Final Project Mode

This week, Anafim (“Branches”) 3rd – 5th grade children were in final project mode. We had focus. We were creative. We challenged ourselves, and through our final projects, came to new understandings about the Torah, ourselves, and each other. It’s what final projects are all about. We also took time to play Hebrew games!

Identifying Our Big Questions and Ideas

We pulled out Big Questions and generated new ones. Second, we headed over to our collages. We gave titles to our earlier work, …

Genesis 43-46 (Yosef Reveals Himself to His Brothers) for 3rd-5th

Genesis 43 1. The famine in the land was very bad. Once they finished eating the grain which they had brought back from Egypt, their father said to them, “Go back and buy us a little more to eat.” 3. Yehuda said to him, “The man really warned us, ‘If your brother isn’t with you, …

Yosef 3D!

In Yetzirah this week Anafim started working on 3D techniques! It was thrilling to explore different ways to make paper stand up. Each person chose a scene they were invested in and created a realistic or symbolic 3D paper project. The Anafimers used a variety of scale, shape, and color to create truly unique and …

Calm, Purpose, Joy

What a calm week we had! What purpose! What joy! Our Anafim (3rd – 5th grade) children got to make a lot of choices about their learning this week. The result: a very chill week, full of collaboration, creativity, and joy. We experimented in yetzirah (art/creativity) with 3D collage. (Truly remarkable ideas about Genesis!) Children decided …
